In the fall of 2003 the Leon County Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management,
the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross
and the Leon County School District embarked
on a project to install hurricane shutters on 14 schools in Leon County. In undertaking
this project the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross would add to its
inventory of safe shelter space that could be used to house evacuees when a hurricane
threatens the Big Bend Region of Florida.
During the planning portion of the project the Capital Area Chapter provided the manpower to complete a wide variety of activities including site visits and working on the $3,500,000 Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) application that was submitted by the Leon County Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management to the State of Florida Department of Community Affairs. In February of 2005 the shutter instalation was complete. Working together the Leon County Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management, the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Leon County School District were able to establish 20,000 additional safe shelter spaces for evacuees fleeing hurricanes threatening the Big Bend Region.
