"What do you get when you combine a leaf blower, construction paper, straws and tape? Leon High School science students
building Hurricane Proof Houses!" This is how Channel 6 TV news anchor Ed Muir introduced the Nightly News one September
evening. The students had built houses with these simple materials. The leaf blower, showing 91 miles per hour on the wind
gauge, blew forcefully on the houses. Some withstood the test of the wind and some were destroyed. The students were applying
science principles about the force of hurricane winds as well as construction designs that make houses more durable during
strong winds. In preparation for constructing their homes, students learned the importance of roof truss bracing and other
disaster mitigation techniques form the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross
Students can learn about protecting their home from hurricane wind damage and have fun at the same time.
